American doctor Frank Young patented the butt plug, known as Dr. Young's Ideal Rectal Dilators, in 1892. The instruments were marketed as medical tools meant to treat conditions such as constipation, insomnia, headaches, and even insanity. They were sold as part of a wave of questionable medical treatments that claimed to cure a wide range of illnesses through rectal dilation, including ailments that were often misunderstood or misdiagnosed at the time, such as hysteria and nervous disorders.
