In 1968, Japan Airlines Captain Kohei Asoh accidentally landed his Douglas DC-8 jet in the shallow waters of San Francisco Bay while attempting to reach San Francisco International Airport. During the investigation, Asoh openly admitted responsibility and told the U.S. authorities, "As you Americans say, I f---ed up." His blunt honesty surprised investigators and helped establish what later became known as the "Asoh Defense." The phrase describes the idea that taking immediate and complete responsibility for a mistake, without excuses, can sometimes lead to a more lenient outcome.
