Linda Atkins’ Lifesaving Orange Juice

In 2011, Linda Atkins, a Dollar General cashier in Tennessee, felt symptoms of diabetic shock during her shift, grabbed a $1.69 bottle of orange juice from the cooler, drank it to stabilize herself, and paid for it after she finished work. The company still fired her for "grazing," saying she violated store policy by consuming merchandise before purchase. In 2016, a federal jury found Dollar General had discriminated against her because of her diabetes and awarded her $277,565 in back pay and damages.
