During an audit at the University of North Carolina in 2001, staff discovered that one of their most reliable file servers had been accidentally walled off in a construction project and left sealed behind a wall for more than four years. The machine kept running the entire time, serving files and handling logins without anyone realizing it was physically inaccessible. Administrators only noticed the problem when they tried to trace network cabling during the audit and found the server’s room no longer existed.
