After 35 years of age, the human brain starts to shrink in volume, losing about 0.2% each year at first. As you get older, that rate accelerates to over 0.5% a year by about age 60. This gradual atrophy continues decade after decade. By age 90, the brain will have lost on average around 14% of its original volume.
