Humans are the only animals that can blush and perhaps the only animals that can feel embarrassment, making blushing "the most peculiar and most human of all expressions." When a person feels embarrassed, blood vessels in the face dilate and allow more blood to flow into the skin. That rush of blood turns the cheeks red and produces the visible blush we recognize.
