Newborns don't shed tears because their tear ducts don't fully develop until they are one to three months old, making it impossible for babies to produce actual tears at first. In those early weeks, they can cry loudly, but their eyes often stay dry. As the tear ducts mature over that one- to three-month window, their crying finally starts to produce visible tears.
