Kidneys Once Judged Your Soul

People used to think the kidneys governed one's conscience, and several Bible verses say that God inspects the kidneys of the dead along with their hearts. In those passages, the inner organs symbolized a person's deepest thoughts and moral state. Jewish tradition even holds that one kidney counsels what is good and the other what is evil. In that older view of the body, your kidneys did not just filter blood; they also stood in for the place where moral choices took shape.
