Singing clearly is possible with a speech impediment because singing and speech are processed by different hemispheres of the brain. In everyday conversation, the hemisphere that controls normal speech can struggle and produce broken or blocked words. When the same person sings, the brain routes the task through the hemisphere that handles singing instead, so the words come out more smoothly.
