Mercedes McCambridge Tortures Exorcist Voice

During the recording sessions for The Exorcist, actress Mercedes McCambridge was hired to dub the demon’s voice. To make her performance sound brutally harsh, she swallowed raw eggs, chain-smoked, and drank whiskey before and during the sessions. She had the crew bind her to a chair while she recorded so she could physically convey the demon’s torment. McCambridge later requested no on-screen credit for the film.
