Patton Slaps Soldiers, Leads Phantom

During World War II, General George S. Patton was relieved of command after two separate incidents in which he slapped shell-shocked soldiers in a field hospital. News of his behavior sparked a massive public outcry in the United States. In response, General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered Patton to apologize to the men he had assaulted. Eisenhower then reassigned him to help lead a “phantom” decoy unit equipped with inflatable tanks.
