Coded D-Day Pigeon Still Unread

In 1982, workers in the UK found a mummified carrier pigeon in a chimney, still carrying an encrypted D-Day message dated from 1944. The bird had never completed its mission, so the coded note remained hidden for decades inside the house. When experts examined the message, they realized that the cipher did not match any known wartime codebooks. Britain’s intelligence agency has asked the public for help, and the D-Day message still has not been decoded (as of February 2026).
