In 2020, over a five-month period, a nurse at Yale's fertility center stole the fentanyl in 175 vials that were meant to relieve pain for women undergoing egg retrieval procedures. The nurse secretly replaced the powerful opioid with saline solution, so the vials looked normal but contained no effective pain medication. As a result, women went through the invasive procedure without real pain relief.
