Before the movie Ghost hit theaters in 1990, Bruce Willis turned down the chance to play Sam Wheat, the role that ultimately went to Patrick Swayze. Willis later told a New York Times reporter in 1996 that he did not think the movie could work because the main character was dead for most of it, and he called himself a “knucklehead” for saying no. Nine years after Ghost, Willis starred in The Sixth Sense (1999) in a thematically similar role.
