Andrew Jackson’s Swearing Parrot Funeral

Andrew Jackson’s Swearing Parrot Funeral

President Andrew Jackson owned a pet parrot named Poll that picked up his habit of swearing. When Jackson died in 1845 and mourners gathered for his funeral at The Hermitage in Tennessee, Poll stayed nearby with the crowd. As the service began, the bird started swearing and yelling profanities it had learned from Jackson. The clergy eventually ordered Poll removed from the ceremony so the funeral could continue in peace.
