In World War I, armies introduced an early version of the buddy system to fight trench foot by making each soldier jointly responsible for a partner’s feet instead of just his own. Paired soldiers checked and cared for each other’s feet in the wet, unsanitary trenches, which improved compliance with prevention routines. With this simple change in responsibility, trench foot rates dropped significantly among frontline troops.
