Some women born with a double uterus, or uterus didelphys, actually have two periods per month and need two samples taken during smear tests, one from each cervix. In this rare congenital condition, the Müllerian ducts fail to fuse fully during fetal development, leaving two separate uterine cavities and often two cervixes.
