Did Singing Precede Human Speech

In his 1871 book The Descent of Man, Charles Darwin wondered whether human language abilities began with singing instead of spoken words. Modern researchers have studied fossils of the hyoid bone in the throat to trace when our ancestors could control their vocal tracts well enough to sing. These fossil hyoids show that humans would have had the physical ability to sing more than 530,000 years ago.
