Elephant Brains Surprisingly Few Neurons

A brain can be very large yet contain relatively few neurons if those neurons are huge, as they are in animals like elephants. In contrast, primate neurons are much smaller, which allows far more of them to pack into a given brain volume. Bird neurons are even tinier, so some bird species can fit an exceptionally high number of neurons into relatively small brains.
