When Overhydration Kills Endurance Athletes

Between 2014 and 2024, there have been at least 15 cases of athletes dying from overhydration during sporting events. In these cases, they consumed so much fluid that it diluted the sodium in their blood. This dangerous dilution caused water to shift into tissues and led to swelling of the brain and lungs.
