Finland’s Tiny Historic Tatar Community

In Finland, there is a small Tatar ethnic minority of about 600 to 700 people who trace their roots to migrants from the Volga region in Russia who arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These Finnish Tatars practice Sunni Islam and speak the Turkic Tatar language, preserving their own religious and linguistic traditions alongside Finnish life. They are recognized as the oldest Muslim community in Finland.
