In the 1920s, Cuban chess master José Raúl Capablanca, then one of the world’s best players and a former world champion, tried to promote his own variant called Capablanca Chess because he believed top-level games were becoming too repetitive and drawish. His version enlarged the board and added new pieces with unique moves.
