During World War II, the U.S. Navy submarine USS Grayback was sunk with 80 sailors aboard and then remained undiscovered for 75 years because of a single mistranslation in wartime Japanese records. Researchers later realized that an error in transcribing the coordinates had placed the wreck in the wrong location, and once they corrected the entry in 2019, searchers found the submarine within days.
