Last Official Smallpox Stocks

After the World Health Organization declared smallpox eradicated in 1980, the sole official remaining specimens of the variola virus were preserved in two high-security laboratories. One repository sits at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, and the other at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR in Koltsovo, Russia.
