A newborn is triggered into its first breath by contractions that reduce oxygen flow through the umbilical cord, which increases carbon dioxide. The rise in carbon dioxide causes acidosis that triggers the respiratory center of the brain and makes the baby start using its lungs. In this way, the stress of labor itself flips the switch from placental gas exchange to independent breathing, forcing the infant to take that crucial first breath.
