During the Indiana Gas Boom of the 1880s, towns and companies burned huge “flambeaux” torch displays, wasting around 90 percent of the natural gas just for advertising and public amusement. Within a couple of decades, the fields were largely depleted, the wells lost pressure, and most of the oil that could have been pushed out by that gas was left trapped underground.
