In 1403, during the Battle of Shrewsbury, the future King Henry V was shot in the face with an arrow that lodged about 6 inches into his skull. A surgeon named John Bradmore, who was in prison at the time, crafted a custom hollow extractor and slowly widened the wound over days before removing the arrowhead and packing the cavity, saving Henry’s life and leaving him with a lifelong facial scar.
