On July 30, 1916, a freight car loaded with TNT exploded at the Black Tom Island munitions depot in New York Harbor, creating a blast so powerful it registered as a 5.5-magnitude earthquake and was felt 90 miles away in Philadelphia. The explosion damaged the Statue of Liberty, and her torch platform has remained closed to the public ever since.
