In 1999, 15-year-old hacker Jonathan James broke into computer systems at NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense, intercepting software and sensitive data. NASA shut down parts of its computer network for 21 days to investigate and repair the breach, a move that reportedly cost tens of thousands of dollars. James later became the first juvenile in the United States to face incarceration for cybercrime.
