Bell's Early Greenhouse Effect Prediction

In 1917, Alexander Graham Bell made a striking prediction when he warned that the unchecked burning of fossil fuels would create a "sort of greenhouse effect" on the planet. He argued that continually releasing carbon from coal and oil into the atmosphere would trap heat and alter the climate. Bell urged scientists and policymakers to look beyond fossil fuels and championed alternative energy sources, including solar power.
