In 1931, Winston Churchill wrote an essay called "Fifty Years Hence," in which he made a striking prediction about how future food would be produced. He declared that "we shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium." Churchill imagined synthetic foods that would be practically indistinguishable from natural products and saw this method as a more efficient way to produce meat. Decades later, researchers began developing real lab-grown meat.
