In the early hours of April 19, 2017, 21-year-old Victor Carl Sibson stood in the Anchorage, Alaska apartment he shared with his longtime girlfriend, 22-year-old Brittanymae Haag, and put a handgun to his head. Prosecutors say Haag tried to stop him from killing himself, but when Sibson pulled the trigger, the bullet entered his head and then exited, striking her in the chest.
Both collapsed on the floor and were rushed to the hospital, where Haag died the same day while Sibson survived his life-threatening injuries. A grand jury later indicted Sibson for second-degree murder, and a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf as he was held on a $250,000 bond, facing the possibility of spending decades in prison.
