We are not born with the bacteria that cause tooth decay; we pick them up later when saliva carrying cavity-causing germs gets into our mouths. The main culprits are strains like Streptococcus mutans, which often spread from parents, siblings, or other close contacts through shared utensils, food, or kisses. Once those bacteria colonize a child's mouth, they feed on sugars, produce acid, and slowly erode tooth enamel.
