As a kid in Baltimore, Michael Phelps hated getting his face wet, so when he was seven, his mother steered him toward the backstroke to keep his head out of the water. He had been diagnosed with ADHD and stopped taking medication in the sixth grade, learning instead to pour his restless energy into the pool.
