Su Hui’s 841 Character Star

Su Hui’s 841 Character Star

In 4th-century China, poet Su Hui wrote "The Star Gauge" for her estranged husband, arranging 841 characters in a 29x29 grid as a literary gift. The poem can be read in multiple directions and intricate patterns, producing more than 3,000 shorter rhyming poems within the larger design. Each path through the grid reveals a different verse, turning her declaration of love and longing into a kind of poetic tapestry. The work still stands as one of the most complex palindromic compositions in literary history.
