Tyson Steele's Three-Week Alaskan Winter

Tyson Steele's Three-Week Alaskan Winter

In December 2019, 30-year-old Tyson Steele accidentally set his remote cabin in Alaska on fire when he put a large piece of cardboard in his wood stove and an ember blew out onto the roof, burning his home down in the middle of subzero winter. He watched his dog die in the blaze, salvaged what little he could from the ruins, and then slept in a makeshift snow shelter and later a partially roofed tent, living on peanut butter, canned food, and whatever scraps he had left.

With no working phone and no vehicle, he stamped a giant SOS in the snow and tried to stay mentally busy, telling reporters later that he was not exactly trained, just used to the outdoors, and had watched a lot of YouTube videos. After about three weeks in the wilderness, an Alaska State Troopers helicopter spotted his SOS, landed, and flew the frostbitten but alive Steele out to safety.
