In June 2013, Chinese climber Zhang Jingchuan was at a 13,000-foot base camp on Nanga Parbat in Pakistan when Taliban gunmen stormed the tents, gathered the foreign mountaineers, and began executing them. As the shooting started, he knocked one attacker aside and sprinted barefoot through the dark, wearing only his underwear, before diving into a ravine where he hid for about an hour in the cold.
He then crept back into camp, slipped into a tent to grab a jacket and a satellite phone, and climbed to higher ground to get away from the killers. From there he called the local emergency line, reported the massacre, and survived an attack that left 11 other people dead.
