In May 1999, Swedish skier Anna Bagenholm fell headfirst through a frozen stream in Norway and became trapped under the ice with only a small air pocket to breathe from. After about 80 minutes in the near-freezing water, her body temperature dropped to 56.7°F (13.7°C), her heart stopped, and rescuers flew what appeared to be a lifeless, clinically dead patient.
Doctors used cardiopulmonary bypass and careful rewarming for hours until her heart finally started beating again and her organs slowly recovered. Remarkably, she made a full neurological recovery and later returned to work as a radiologist at the same hospital that had brought her back to life.
