In 1998, heart patient Jo Ann Altsman collapsed from a heart attack in her trailer at a campground near Lake Erie, far from anyone who could hear her cries, except her Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, Lulu. Lulu forced her 150-pound body through a small dog door, scraping her belly raw, broke out of the yard, and repeatedly walked into the middle of the campground road, where she lay down and played dead until a driver finally stopped.
The pig then led the man back to the trailer, where he found Jo Ann on the floor and called 911, and paramedics rushed her to the hospital for emergency heart surgery. Doctors later said that if she had arrived about fifteen minutes later, she likely would have died or lost her quality of life, and Lulu was honored with an ASPCA hero medal and national TV appearances for saving her owner.
