In February 2016, an 18-month-old German Shepherd named Luna fell off her owner Nick Haworth’s fishing boat in the Pacific Ocean near San Clemente Island, a Navy training base off Southern California. Luna reportedly swam about 2 miles to the island, where she vanished and was presumed dead after a search turned up nothing. Five weeks later, Navy staffers arriving on the remote island saw a blue-eyed dog sitting by the roadside, and she calmly walked up when they called her name. Luna had survived by catching and eating mice, and veterinarians found her only slightly undernourished but otherwise in perfect condition before she was reunited with Haworth.
