In the 1950s, Austrian American architect Victor Gruen, the pioneer behind the first modern shopping malls, imagined them as true town centers rather than just retail hubs. His early plans called for mixed-use complexes that combined commercial stores with libraries, apartments, offices, green spaces, post offices, and medical services under one roof. He wanted these malls to function as walkable community spaces where people could live, work, and access public services, not just shop.
