Greek Sirens Bird-Body Oracles

In Greek mythology, the sirens were never described as beautiful mermaids but as eerie bird-bodied creatures with human faces who lured sailors to their deaths by promising secret knowledge and wisdom about the future. Ancient writers like Homer portrayed them sitting in a meadow surrounded by the rotting corpses of men who had listened to their song and crashed on the rocks. Over time, later art and popular culture softened them into half-fish seductresses, but the original sirens were closer to deadly oracles than to underwater beauties.
