Eadweard Muybridge First Onscreen Kiss

Eadweard Muybridge First Onscreen Kiss

In 1887, photographer and motion pioneer Eadweard Muybridge captured what is believed to be the first kiss on camera, and it was between two women. Muybridge shot the brief sequence as part of his motion studies, decades before Hollywood existed and long before commercial cinema took shape. This early filmed kiss predates Thomas Edison’s famous short The Kiss by about nine years, even though Edison’s film is often wrongly credited as the first on-screen kiss in film history.
