Papua Cyclops Mountains Tree Shrimp

In 2023, scientists exploring the Cyclops Mountains of Papua discovered a new species of shrimp that lives on trees and in the forest soil high up the slopes. The tiny terrestrial shrimp, belonging to a lineage normally found on the seashore, uses its powerful hind legs to make long jumps between trunks when predators approach. Researchers watched it spring away and noted that it carries its eggs in pockets along its body, a strange land-based lifestyle for a creature most people expect to see underwater.
