In 1950, the restaurant that would become Dunkin' was renamed from Open Kettle to Dunkin' Donuts after an architect working for the company was inspired by the idea of dunking doughnuts into coffee. The new name captured the pairing of coffee and doughnuts that defined the brand. In 2018, the company shortened its name to Dunkin'.
