William Conqueror Harrying Northern England

William Conqueror Harrying Northern England

The Harrying of the North was a brutal military campaign that William the Conqueror ordered in 1069โ€“1070 to crush rebellions in northern England after his 1066 conquest. In response to repeated uprisings and support for rival claimants, he sent Norman forces to burn villages, destroy crops, and slaughter livestock across Yorkshire and beyond, creating a deliberate famine. Contemporary chroniclers reported that these scorched earth tactics killed or displaced a huge share of the local population, with later estimates suggesting up to 75 percent in some areas. The devastation left large parts of northern England depopulated for years, a legacy archaeologists and historians still trace in the regionโ€™s records and landscape.
