Abolitionists White Slave Photo Campaign

In the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, some abolitionists and anti-slavery activists highlighted the existence of so-called “white slaves,” people who appeared white but were legally enslaved under the one-drop rule. They circulated photographs and stories of these individuals to confront white audiences with the idea that someone who looked like them could still be treated as property.
