On September 11, 2001, Lieutenant General Timothy Maude, the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, was working in his Pentagon office when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building. He died in the attack, becoming the highest-ranking U.S. military officer killed by foreign action since World War II. His death came just days before his office was scheduled to move out of the section of the Pentagon that the hijacked plane destroyed.
