The Pentagon covers about 6.5 million square feet of space, roughly twice the floor area of the Empire State Building, and houses around 23,000 military and civilian employees. Designers laid out the five-sided structure so that no point inside is more than a 10-minute walk from any other point, despite its vast size. Construction began during World War II, and workers finished the building in just 16 months. This combination of scale, efficiency, and speed made the Pentagon the largest office building in the world.
