In 1945, the German ocean liner Wilhelm Gustloff sailed through the frigid waters of the Baltic Sea with thousands of people on board. A Soviet submarine torpedoed the ship, and it quickly sank in the icy sea. About 9,000 people died in the sinking, making the shipwreck of Wilhelm Gustloff the deadliest in history in terms of lives lost.
